Jubilee harambee cash from tax evaders - Raila

Raila Odinga has asked the President to launch an audit of DP William Ruto as his "harambee millions are hurting the economy".
It was reported last Tuesday that Ruto has given out at least Sh17 million in harambees in 76 days alone – excluding contributions from President Uhuru Kenyatta.
Ruto has declared that no one can stop him donating generously and underlined his resolve by giving Sh3 million at a function in Garissa over the weekend.

Claiming senior state officials donate money obtained from tax evaders, Raila said civil servants including cabinet and principal secretaries should also be audited.
The Cord leader said the officials have amassed wealth that that does not correspond with their salaries.
“The economy is suffering at the expense of those evading tax. An individual evades paying Sh1 billion tax only to bribe a politician with Sh100 million that they use in harambees,” he said.
He addressed the press in Kisumu on Sunday accompanied by Siaya Senator James Orengo, woman representative Christine Ombaka and MPs Aduma Owuor (Nyakach), Gideon Ochanda (Bondo) and Silvance Osele (Kabondo Kasipul).
Raila challenged Ruto to declare the source of the "millions he dishes out at fundraisers", he said President Uhuru Kenyatta should order an immediate lifestyle audit.
Regarding the DP's claim that the Opposition is bent on scaring away investors over the Eurobond, Raila noted that the request for details from the Treasury was in good faith.
Ruto's statement was "irresponsible and regrettable", he said, reiterating that the Treasury "cooked the books" to cover up a Sh140 billion loss from the initial Sh250 billion Eurobond proceeds.
In a letter to the President regarding the proceeds on Sunday, Raila said Ruto termed Opposition leaders "saboteurs" yet they are seeking the truth on behalf of the public.
He said "the accounts still do not balance despite all the apparently feverish massaging by civil servants and sections of your executive".
He noted that the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has launched an investigation but said more urgent action is required.
